What is the manufacturing process of seamless steel pipe?

Seamless steel pipe as the name suggests is a pipe without a seam or a weld-joint. In a seam steel pipe, the seam or the weld-joint is the weaker part of the pipe limiting the strength of the pipe to the strength of the weld-joint. Whereas the seamless steel pipe does not have any such joint and thus has uniform structure & strength all over the pipe body. Thus the seamless steel pipe can withstand higher pressure, higher temperature, higher mechanical stress & corrosive atmosphere and find wide applications in oil & gas, refinery, petrochemical, chemical, fertilizer, power, automotive, mechanical & structural applications.
Seamless steel pipe is formed by forcing molten metal through a round die with a plug in the center to form a long tube of continuous metal which is then cut into appropriate lengths; usually either 21 ft or 40 ft. although other lengths are available. Seamless steel pipe is more uniform in consistency. Seamless steel pipe can also, usually, withstand higher operating pressures and temperatures so it is commonly preferred for use in high pressure systems. Fluid flow through seamless steel pipe is generally less turbulent.
According to manufacturing process of seamless steel pipe, seamless steel pipe can be divided into hot rolled seamless steel pipe and cold rolled seamless steel pipe.
Hot rolled seamless steel pipe process:
Hot-rolled seamless steel pipe production base deformation process can be summarized as three stages: perforation, extension and finishing.
The main purpose of the perforation process is to become a solid round billet piercing hollow shell. Capillary in the specifications, accuracy and surface quality can not meet the requirements of the finished product, further improvements are needed to deform the metal through. The main purpose of the stretching machine is further reduced sectional view (main compression wall) for a larger axial extension, so that the capillary improved dimensional accuracy, surface quality and organizational performance.
Cold rolled seamless steel pipe process:
round tube → heating → perforation → Heading → annealing → pickling → oiled (copper) → multi-pass cold drawn (cold rolled) → blank tube → heat treatment → straightening →hydrostatic testing (testing) → mark → storage
The general cold strip mills, volume should go through continuous annealing (CAPL unit) to eliminate cold hardening and rolling stress, or batch annealing reach the mechanical properties of the corresponding standard specifies. Cold rolled steel surface quality, appearance, dimensional accuracy better than hot-rolled plate, and right-rolled thin product thickness is about 0.18mm, so the majority of users favor.
